Measure out the milk, mix with the sugar, stir and set aside.
Grease a large baking tray or two medium ones.
Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees.
Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl. Using your hands, mix in the butter, until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture.
Beat the egg in small cup, pour into the milk and sugar mixture. Add the vanilla essence and mix until the egg is fully integrated.
Pour the wet mixture into the well and with a wooden spoon, gently mix until you have one piece of dough.
Pour the dough out onto a flat surface that has been sprinkled with flour.
With the tips of your fingers, gently flatten the dough to a 2-2.5cm thickness – please do not use a rolling pin. Then using a round cutter, cut out the dough and set the scones onto the greased tray, brush with melted butter or a milk and egg mixture.
Bake in the oven for 20-25min. Cool and serve.
